At the end of each day, I ask myself this question.  What have I done today?  That can mean a lot of things to many different people.  What it means to me is simple.  What have I done today to make sure that I am capable of protecting my loved ones, myself and others in need.  I believe it is a very important question that each of you should ask yourself!

Did I workout, did I practice my self-defense or self-protection skills, did I pray or mediate, did I study my threat?  Well the list of questions can go on and on.  Yes, I know that life is a mystery and yes, we are living in troubled times.  Honestly, it has always been that way.  Life will always be a mystery and we will always live in troubled times.  The world is changing and change brings out stress in all of us.

What have you done today to ensure your survival?  What have you done today to ensure that you win each and everyday as you face your daily battles?  Ask yourself, What have I done today?  If the answer is nothing, get out and do something immediately.  Be safe and train hard.  Best wishes!

Vigilance!

Vigilance

Vigilance

We live in a free society.  Our freedom has been earned by those who have gone on before us.  In order to maintain our freedom, we must continue to think and act like a successful captor.  We must be vigilant!  To be vigilant is to be alert.  Alertness is the state of paying close and continuous attention.  Being curious is a good thing.  Maintaining a mental state of condition yellow or 360 degree awareness as explained by the late great firearms instructor Colonel Jeff Cooper is paramount.

The painting of the red-shouldered hawk by Holly Byram is a reminder to all of the warriors.  “Vigilance” must be maintained.  The caption on the painting states “With a watchful eye, the successful captor is ever vigilant.”  Each year as we get further and further away from the events of September 11, 2001, as many people have stated, we must not only remember, we must never forget.  However, too ensure that our society is never thrust into chaos as it was on that day, we must pay attention to our surroundings.

The Vigiles, or more properly the Vigiles Urbani (“watchmen of the City”), were the firefighters and police of Ancient Rome.  Each of us is now society’s new Vigiles.  The security and well-being of our society is in our hands.  When you see something that seems wrong, report it to your local authorities.  If you are the local authorities, investigate it.  Gavin de Becker explains in his book Gift of Fear that violent acts are predictable and preceded by clear warning signs.  We need only to be alert to these pre-incident indicators and take appropriate action when they are presented to us.

We must maintain our freedom so that our way of life that we so cherish, survives.  We will do this by achieving victory against all of those that seek to harm us or our loved ones.   As stated by Sir Winston Churchill,” Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival.”  Victory is achieved through “Vigilance.”

Eight Easy Steps to Burglar Proof your Home this Summer!

I encourage all families to use these simple tips to improve home security while on vacation this summer.

“These are rather simple techniques and actions that take little of your time, but will help prevent a break-in,” “Self-defense is about thinking ahead. An important lesson we teach all our students and share with their families.”

·       Ask neighbors friends or family to check on your home while you’re away.

·       Stop your mail and newspapers.

If you forget, then ask a neighbor to collect your mail and newspapers. Newspapers piled in the driveway and overflowing mailboxes are invitations to burglars. This will also help to prevent identity theft, since your neighbor will remove any bank and credit card statements, which may be delivered to your mailbox.

·       Ask a neighbor to put a filled garbage can in front of your house on collection day.

·       Make arrangements for your lawn to be mowed.

Schedule a teenager with a lawnmower or a lawn service to cut your lawn while your gone; or simply ask a friendly neighbor to mow your lawn and give your house a “somebody’s home” look. Remember to prune trees or shrubs, which may offer cover for burglars to break into your home.

·       Ask a friend or neighbor to accept all deliveries, such as packages, etc.

Make sure all scheduled deliveries arrive before you leave. If not, then ask a neighbor or family member to remove any packages, shipments, boxes, etc. that may alert burglars of your absence.

·       Set automatic timers on lights, televisions and radios.

Not only set automatic timers for lights, televisions and radios, but also set them at different times, so your house appears to look and sound occupied. Be sure exterior lights have timers and motion sensors. Burglars hate this kind of lighting because it reveals their movements outside a house. Place shades and blinds in their normal positions, but adjust them, so no one is able to view the interior, and conclude no one is home.

·       Do not leave any tell tale signs that you are away on vacation.

Notes left on mailboxes or doors for delivery are bad ideas. Restrict the list of those who know you are on vacation.

·       Ensure that your home has that “lived-in” look.

According to the local police department and home security experts, the master bedroom is the first place a criminal will search, so remove any valuables, such as jewelry from your home before you leave. Place your valuables in a safety deposit box or ask someone you trust to hold them while you’re away. Notify local police of your departure and return schedule. Give a neighbor or family member your house key and ask him or her to check inside your house every two or three days. That person should also have your itinerary and contact information in case of an emergency.

“The goal is to use deceptive methods to convince anyone outside your home that you are there, even though you are actually on vacation. Burglars look for easy targets, so use these tips to deter burglars from breaking into your home this summer. You’ll enjoy your vacation much more because you’ve taken positive action to increase your peace of mind.”

Should you carry a handgun for Self-Protection?  Yes, and No.

NO, if you plan on buying one and not attending realistic combat related training.  NO, if you are not going to learn how to use it as well as you use your toothbrush.  NO, if you are not serious about the possibility that you might have to take the life of another human being.

YES, if you buy a handgun, purchase good ammunition, buy a quality concealable holster and belt.  YES, if you are already signed up for realistic combat oriented firearms training.  YES, if you understand the law and Means, Opportunity and Intent.  YES, if you are willing to take the life of another human being to protect yourself or your loved one.

Warrior Workout!

“To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to become one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the end of our lives. Nobody was born a warrior, in exactly the same way that no one is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other.”

Carlos Castaneda

Defeat is a state of mind.  No one is ever defeated until defeat has been accepted as a reality.  To me, defeat in anything is merely temporary, and its punishment is but an urge for me to greater effort to achieve my goal.  Defeat simply tells me that something is wrong in my doing; it is a path leading to success and truth.
